NOVEMBER MEETING MINUTES

Mosaic Guild Meeting Notes for November 2015 planning meeting

The first item discussed was the Guild’s blog. Lisa Ferguson has taken over the blog from Danette. She has run in to some issues and she will be following up with Danette. The blog may need to be started over and we will lose some of the material that is on the blog currently but this would be an excellent time to have updated pictures and a larger variety of pictures too. Lisa will let us know what she wants us to send her when she is ready to make the changes. Lisa has updated the members list and has added some recent events.

We discussed adding a calendar with upcoming events and meetings. We hope to have more meeting and event pictures to keep the blog fresh. If anyone has any good pictures that they take at either please forward them to Lisa and she can see about adding them somewhere in the blog.

Another topic - adding a contact person or persons to the blog. This would be for people who have been to the blog and may be interested in joining the Guild or even just to attend a meeting. We are trying not to have too much personal information on the blog but still not discourage anyone interested in checking us out. If there are any members that would like to be a point person please let me know. I think at least two people would be able to cover those emails.

The blog is a work in progress but if we have an event to post we can still do that on the current blog.

I know all members are very appreciative of the work that Danette has done on the blog in the past. Thank you to Barbra Benson Keith for getting the blog started. Thank you to Lisa for getting involved in the blog as a very new member. Your time and talent are very much appreciated. I hope I did not leave any one out.

We had a small turn out this year for the Mosaic on a Stick show. I think that the people who did contribute had really beautiful pieces. Thank you for your participation. Thank you Lori for all your work too. We had voting for People’s Choice and Guild members’ choice. We did not have enough votes to award a Guild members choice but the People’ choice goes to Julie Reeve. Her piece “East Bank West Bank” won.
__________________________________________________________________
The holiday party will be at Susan Mathis home. December 10th at 6:00 pm. We all will bring a food to share and anyone who wants to can make a mosaic decoration or ornament. We will guess who has made each one and have a $25 gift certificate for the person who has the most correct answers. Susan will send out information on food etc.

We will still have our tesserae exchange so bring a bag of goodies if you wish to participate in that.
__________________________________________________________________
Lisa has sent out an email on the opportunity to show your work at a coffee shop along with some of her pieces. This is Royal Grounds coffee shop. Thanks Lisa for including members in this opportunity. If you are interested let Lisa know as soon as possible.
__________________________________________________________________
The topic of whether to put in a submission to the Bloomington art Center for the fourth try was discussed. It was decided that as a group we would not apply. If any individuals would like to submit (or in smaller groups) it may be a better opportunity to be selected.

The subject of having a Mosaic Guild ad in the annual tile book was discussed. It was decided that it was not worth the cost.
______________________________________________________________
It was suggested that any member that has a recent mosaic that they are working on or have completed please bring it to the next meeting to show the group. This inspires us all to keep working and expands our ideas. Please share with the group as much and as often as you can. We love to see each other’s art.

We also discussed the only show we have booked at this time for 2015. It will be at The Maple Grove Arts Center in April. Opening night will be April 9th. Details will follow through emails and at the February meeting.

Several other venues were discussed and individual members are checking in to other locations.
__________________________________________________________________
The meetings that have been finalized at this time are for February, April, and June. All details will follow as we get closer to the dates.
February 11th is at Lisa Ferguson’s home. The project for this meeting is to make a 3”x 3” mosaic. This is a repeat from a couple of years ago but we had fun with it and it is easy to complete.
Also at this meeting everyone should bring an ugly plate or maybe an ugly ceramic piece that we will pass on to another member. We will take our ugly item home and turn it into something beautiful (or at least interesting). We will bring our transformed piece to the April 8th meeting. We can decide if we want to vote on the best transformation and have a prize for the winner. The catch is the ugly piece still has to be recognizable in the new creation.

April 8th is at my house. We will have our transformed mosaics and we will also have a tesserae and tool exchange, swap or sale. If anyone has any items that they want to bring to either sell or swap this is the time to do it.
We can have a show and tell on our ugly plate challenge.

June 10th meeting will be at Amy Leyden’s home. We will do a progressive mosaic. Each person should bring an 8” x 8 “ piece that we can mosaic on. Bring some tiles, beads, glass scraps etc. to pool for all to use. We will each take an 8 x 8 and start working on it. After a few minutes we will pass the piece on to the next person and each person will add to the piece. We should come up with something quite interesting considering all our individual styles.

These are the meetings that we have finalized. I will send out an addendum when I have additional information.

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing.

Best Regards,

Trudy

CHAIRS WITH FLAIRS EVENT - POST UPDATE

Dear Guild Members,

Chairs with Flair for the Bridging Organization was truly an inspiring event. The founder Fran is 89 years young and he is so passionate about the work that Bridging is doing. Bridging helps 80 families a week to set up households.

The Mosaic Guild’s pieces were very well received and we made a nice contribution to the $6,500 that was collected from the event. This was up 85% from last year’s event.

The auction was held at The Ford Center. A very interesting, historic space. The food was wonderful and it was a night of great people watching.

Overall a great cause and event. I think all the artists felt privileged to be a part of it. We are looking forward to another opportunity to be involved in this again next year.

BRIDGING ART EVENT - SILENT AUCTION

Dear Guild Members -

On Wednesday, September 10th, Bridging will be holding an event at the Ford Center. It will be a silent auction to raise money for Bridging. This is only their second year holding this event. Several members have made art from donated furniture that Bridging had at their facility. Rachel Arnston has created a mosaic chair. Mimi Leminh has done a mosaic on a table with a shelf, Julie Reeve has adorned a lamp, and Laura Lee has also done a mosaic top on a table. Trudy Vrchota and Janine Irisarri have teamed up and made a table into a Parcheesi game board.

I hope some of you will come to the Bridging event.

POWDERHORN PARK ART FAIR

The Mosaic Guild was represented at the Powderhorn Park Art Fair on August 2nd. We were one of two guilds that were asked to participate in the show. We had a lot of activity at our tent and I think we made some excellent connections with people who were interested in joining the guild or taking lessons. We hope to see some of them at our first meeting (after the summer break) at Mosaic on a Stick. Our meeting night moved to Wednesday the 17th.

Thank you to all who participated and made it a great event.

Regards,

Trudy

June 11th Guild Meeting

The Guild’s last meeting before our summer break is coming up on June 11th at Rachel Arnston’s home. All the pertinent information is below. Rachel will share with us how she has hosted several mosaic parties and in the process opened up mosaic art to many of her friends and family. Social time starts at 6:30. From Rachel- My phones are: cell 612-834-9001 and home 763-420-3050. My address to put in the invitation should be 19203 81st Place North, Corcoran, MN 55311. Do not put Maple Grove even though that is our mailing address. GPS does not send people to the right place when we use Maple Grove. Go figure. We are in the upper northwest quadrant of the Twin Cities. From the south get to 494 going north and take the Bass Lake Road-Cty Rd. 10 exit. (From the east or north, take 696 west, then 494 south, and take the Bass Lake Road-Cty Rd 10 exit. Go west on Bass Lake Road about 3 1/2 miles. Turn right (north) on Highway 101. Pass Rush Creek Golf Course, then turn left on 82nd Place North. Take an immediate left again on 81st Place North. Drive to the back of the development where the gravel starts. we are on the left in the dense woods. Our mail box has flames on it. (My hubby's a car guy.) Thank you Rachel for the directions and tips. I will have the post cards for the Edina show to pass out. If you have not picked up a supply at the Edina Art Center you will be able to get a stack at the meeting. The cards look great; Judy Sell has come through for us again. Thank you Judy! It would be very helpful if I could get a list of the mosaics each member is planning on bringing for this show. You can email the information to me or bring your list to the June meeting. Please include the size of each piece. This will help me to determine if we will have enough art or need to ask for more. If you have a piece that will be hung in a window please make a note of that too. The break area at the art center has a large wall of shelving and three dimensional pieces could go there. I hope that as many artists as possible will bring their 8” x 8” pieces for this show. Two years ago we had the squares for the Haiti quilt on the wall that you see when you first enter the gallery. I would like to hang the 8 x 8’s as a grouping there. A few of the 8 x 8 pieces sold at the Stillwater galley and I think that they hit an affordable price point. If anyone has anything to add to this please feel free to email me and or the group. Regards, Trudy

April 2014 Meeting: Notes after our meeting

Judy Sell "Apron Strings"

A collection of mosaic aprons created by Judy Sell.

In this collection of life size mosaic aprons, I use old dishes to create fabric-like patterns. Look closer and discover hidden messages, which are universal to mothers, some encourage, some nag. Each mosaic has real fabric ties from a vintage apron.

Artist Statement:
I create mosaics from household crockery and other pieces of nostalgia.
My hope is to honor the past with art for the present.

Influences
As a child, I collected tiny trinkets from people, places, and events to help me remember that place in time. Throughout my life I have found comfort in revisiting these treasured shoeboxes filled with memorable keepsakes.

In 1989 I saw a picture of an early 20th century Memory Jar. Looking closely I saw jewelry, pieces of china, and hardware included in this tribute. Mind blown, I began experimenting on my own by applying tiny objects to jugs, soon I became a found-object mosaic artist.

Today I explore THE APRON, created in mosaic. The apron, a symbol for womanhood,
protected my clothes as well as my heart as a mother. I feel feminine and professional
while wearing an apron in the kitchen and in my studio.

Show runs March 13 - April 19

February 2014 Meeting Information

This is a reminder to Mosaic Guild members and anyone that may be interested in checking out The Minnesota Mosaic Guild that our next meeting is February 12th. It will be at my home and the address is 6943 Sand Ridge Rd. Eden Prairie 55346.

We will discuss the upcoming show at the 310 Gallery in Stillwater. I have event related post cards to give out so I hope many members can make the meeting.

If you have had time to create a new 8” x 8” mosaic with the theme of love.  Please bring that with you. We can each share what our inspiration was for our project.  I hope that we will have enough 8” x 8” pieces to display together at the 310 Gallery. Please make sure you have hanging wire on the back of your mosaic.

We can also review the dates for the June show at the Edina Art Center and we have an opportunity to do some community volunteer work that we can discuss.

This will be a good time to discuss any other projects, mosaic shows, or any ideas that you have for the Guild.

See you in February,

Best Regards,

Trudy

Hi Guild Members-

Happy Holidays to everyone. I hope you are all doing well. Just wanted to share with you all (especially those who missed the pot luck dinner) how it went.

There were 12 of us that braved the cold and enjoyed wonderful hospitality at Beth Karjala’s home. We had a fun evening and I think we left after 10:30 so we must have been having a good time.

We had 10 people who brought candles that they crafted. As usual there was a wonderful variety of styles. Laura Lee won a $25 gift certificate to Macy’s because she had 7 correct answers (we had to guess who the artist was for each candle).

We are presently collecting the $25.00 yearly dues. Those can be mailed to Danette Polglase at: 22289 Olinda Trail, Scandia, MN 55073.

I also announced the winners from the MOS show. Danette won for most votes from the Guild Members and I won the Peoples Choice votes.

Our next meeting is in February at my house in Eden Prairie. I will send out emails and post on the blog at least one month before the meeting.

Regards,

Trudy
